Az 1981-ben alakult, 1986-tól városi támogatással, hivatásos művészekkel szimfonikus zenekarként dolgozó együttes 2009 óta regisztrált ELŐADÓ-MŰVÉSZETI SZERVEZET. Nyilvántartási száma: ESZ/057. A regisztráció elvárásainak megfelelően közszolgálati tevékenységet végző zenekar átlaglétszáma: 56 fő.Fenntartója 2003 óta a Gödöllői Szimfonikus Zenekar Alapítvány.  

A zenekar évente 45-48 hangversenyt tart Gödöllőn, a város vonzáskörzetében és határon túli, elsősorban magyarlakta településeken.

A koncerthallgatók létszáma éves szinten: 11-12 ezer fő. Ebből 5-6 ezer gyermek és fiatal.

A zenekar küldetése, hogy Gödöllő városában és a régióban minőségi zenei életet teremtsen, formálja a közönség értékítéletét, megszerettesse az értékes zenét minden korosztállyal és a legszélesebb társadalmi rétegekkel. Jelen legyen a város és a térség kulturális életének színterein. Az utóbbi években egyre magasabb színvonalon és egyre tágabb körben teljesíti azt a kulturális missziót, melynek kiemelt célja az IFJÚSÁG ZENEI NEVELÉSE, hangversenysorozatok szervezésével, zenei ismeretterjesztő tevékenységgel. Ezeken az alkalmakon nevelődik a jövő hangverseny-látogató közönsége. Célunk, hogy az ifjúság minden rétegéhez eljussanak a zeneirodalom mesterművei, a koncerteken a korosztály érdeklődésének megfelelő művek hangozzanak el, lehetőleg interaktív módon, a közönség bevonásával. Gyermekprogram a MESÉLŐ MUZSIKA, amelynek koncertjeit a térség iskoláiban, művelődési házaiban is előadja a zenekar, 8-9 településen. Egyre nagyobb az igény a középiskolásoknak szervezett ZENE TITKAI bérlet iránt, ahol találkozhatnak a fiatalok a „komolyzene” kultúraőrző értékeivel.

A felnőtt közönségnek szervezett városi koncertek gerincét a REMEKMŰVEK GÖDÖLLŐN bérlet alkotja, amelynek műsora ízelítőt ad a zenetörténet szinte minden korszakából. Az ifjúsági és felnőtt bérleti hangversenyek (évente 9-11 koncert) helyszíne a Művészetek Háza Gödöllő színházterme.

A zenekar hagyománnyá vált hangversenyei a Királyi Kastély Lovardájában: Évköszöntő koncertek, Koronázási Hétvége, Barokk Napok, GödöllŐsz Fesztivál, Liszt Fesztivál, Adventi koncert.

Állandó kapcsolat épült ki a város iskoláival, művelődési intézményeivel, rendszeres az együttműködés a művészeti együttesekkel. Talamba Ütőegyüttes, Városi Vegyeskar, zeneiskola.

A zenekar programjait szerkesztő Művészeti Tanács fontosnak tartja azt is, hogy a közönség a körültekintően kiválasztott zeneműveket a lehető legkiválóbb szólisták, vendég-együttesek, vendégkarmesterek tolmácsolásában hallgathassa, és értő műsorvezetés segítse a művek befogadását.
